Education is the single most important factor for the development of any nation. Growth of a country can be attributed to innovative methods of education as well as advances made in the scientific field. These facts were accepted by our predecessors. It was their vision in 1952 that prompted the starting up of this College. In this era of globalization, the Department is making itself equipped to face the challenges and meet the demands of the modern world. The dept. started in 1955.

We had Undergraduate course till the Government phased it out from the Colleges. The graduate course in Physics started in 1960.Currently this course, which is of three-year duration, admits 48 students per batch.

Commencement of the first Post Graduate courses was on 1968. At present we have two PG courses, both two years duration. One is in Electronics and other in Material Science. Each course admits 15 students per year. Highly qualified and dedicated faculty, well-stocked library, state-of –the- art laboratories and networked computer Lab with Internet connection. We had an array of eminent persons in the teaching faculty who helped the department to accomplish the current status.

The Department currently has facilities for research in Photonics and crystal growth.
